In 2025, the Australia-Korea New Energy Forum will explore topics such as carbon capture and storage, green metals, renewable energy and hydrogen and explore opportunities under the newly agreed "Green Economy Partnership Arrangement on Climate and Energy" which was signed by Minister Bowen and his Korean counterpart Minister Ahn Dukgeun in late December 2024. The time is now to enhance Australia-Korea cooperation in energy.
Registration details along with the speakers and agenda will be released closer to the event date.
The Australia-Korea energy relationship
Australia and Korea have a robust partnership in the energy sector, underscored by significant opportunities for collaboration, particularly in renewable energy and emerging technologies. Australia's vast resources, including critical minerals essential for renewable energy technologies, position it as a key supplier for Korea's green transition initiatives. Additionally, Australia's expertise in the LNG and hydrogen industry aligns with Korea's energy diversification strategies aimed at reducing carbon emissions. These synergies not only provide an opportunity to enhance the bilateral trade relationship but also facilitate joint ventures and technology transfers, reinforcing both countries' commitments net zero by 2050.
Key policy between Australia and Korea in energy include:
Green Economy Partnership Arrangement on Climate and Energy (2024)
Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (2021)
MOU on Cooperation in Critical Mineral Supply Chains (2021)
Australia-ROK MOU on Energy and Mineral Resources Cooperation (2019)
ROK-Australia Free Trade Agreement (KAFTA) (2014)
